Health and Safety

The staff of the Hundred Acre Woods Childcare Center promise to follow the rules and laws that have been written by the State of Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry. We feel that these laws have been written to ensure that children are cared for in a safe environment.

Toys and Equipment

  • All toys will be sprayed with bleach water and air-dried daily. Toys that have been put into a child’s mouth will be set aside immediately after the child is finished with it to be cleaned at the end of the day.
  • Tabletops will be cleaned with soapy water, then rinsed, then sprayed with bleach water before and after all snacks and meals.
  • Bathroom sinks, toilets, and floors will be cleaned with bleach water daily.

Nutrition:

  • The Center follows the USDA Food Program requirements and serves nutritious meals including breakfast between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m., lunch between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and a snack at 3:00 p.m. School age children will be given snack when they arrive from the bus after school.

Food Storage

  • Infant formula and food will be provided by parents, labeled, and kept in the Infant Room. Baby food will also be labeled with the date and time of opening. If not used entirely, it will be sent home at the end of the day.
  • Milk will be provided by the Center for snacks and meals. It will be kept in the refrigerator in the kitchen. Once opened, milk will be labeled with the date and time of opening.

Sleeping Equipment

  • Blankets and sheets will be provided by the Center and will be laundered by a staff member weekly (more if needed), using laundry detergent, bleach, and hot water. Cribs and cots will be sprayed with bleach water and wiped weekly (more if needed).

Diapering

  • Changing tables for diapering will be used in the Infant, Toddler, Pre-Preschool and Preschool Rooms. All staff that change diapers will follow the directions for changing diapers posted on the wall near each changing station. These instructions will be reviewed with each staff member. Parents will provide diapers as needed and one package of wet wipes (100 count) per month, and any other supplies that would need to be used at diaper time. These items will be labeled and kept in the changing area for easy access.
  • After each diaper change, the changing area will be cleaned with soapy water, then rinsed, and sanitized with a bleach water solution of 1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 gallon of water. The bleach solution is prepared daily. Staff members will use soap and water for hand washing.
  • Diapers will be disposed of in a plastic lined receptacle, which will be emptied at least once a day. Bathroom faucets and door handles will be disinfected daily.

Secured Facility

  • Our facility uses a keypad secured system. Families will receive a unique code to access the facility and anyone without a code will not have the ability to enter.

Medicine

  • Any medication that a child needs (including diaper rash ointment, teething gel, sunscreen, etc.) must be in the original container. The parent will be required to fill out a Medicine Permission Form for each medicine. Staff will record and initial each time the medicine was given and the amount. Prescription medicines must have the child’s name on the label, not that of another family member.

Minor Injury

  • Appropriate action will be taken to all minor injuries including the use of ice and bandages. Latex gloves will be provided and required for use by the staff members as determined by O.S.H.A.

Emergency Care

  • If a child gets a cut or bump that is serious, the Center will notify the parents or legal guardians immediately. If the parents cannot be reached, the Center will contact the hospital listed on the child’s Emergency Card for advice on proper care of the injury.
  • If a child requires immediate emergency medical attention, a staff member or the Director will call 911 for assistance. Staff members will use procedures learned in CPR and First Aid training, until help arrives. Parents or guardians will be notified as soon as 911 has been called.

Fire and Tornado Emergency Procedures

  • The Center has Fire and Tornado Emergency Policies that are specifically designed for the Center. These policies are posted in each room. Fire and tornado drills are practiced on a regular basis.

Staff Training

  • Every staff member is required to complete a CPR and First Aid training course within the first year of employment. Follow-up and refresher courses will be provided for all staff members.
  • Continuing education is offered by qualified instructors to keep staff members current on childhood diseases, common first aid practices, sanitation procedures, and administering medication. Training will also be provided regarding blood borne pathogens as required by O.S.H.A.
